A Study of the Repair of Articular Cartilage in the Rabbit Knee joint

Abstract
Repair of artilcular cartilage of the medial femoral condyles in adult rabbits was studied radiologically and histologically at various intervals after injury in fifty six complete defect (3mm) with or without synovectomy in weight-bearing surface. The results were summarized as follows.
1. The radiological findings of the knee joints subjected to condylar defects showed narrowing of the joint space while the condylar defects with synovectomy demonstrated degenerative changes of opposite tibial plateau.
2 Microscopic evidence of degenerative change of the opposite tibial plateau was minimal in complete defects, while complete defects with synovectomy it appeared early and progressive.
3. In the complete, defects the rip air of articular cartilage was fulfilled by in growth of fibrous tissue derived both from subchondral bone and from the superficial cartilage and this fibrous tissue was subsequently transformed into fibrocartilage or hyaline cartilage Repair processes were delayed in complete defects with synovectomy in which the superficial cartilage cell differentiated into fibrous tissue.
From these results, it was suggested that synovectomy may induce the alteration in joint environment which was sufficient to initiate reoeressive changes in the superficial cartilage.
